David Quinlan

"My mission is to help others help themselves through martial arts training. Whether for self-defense, fitness, sport, mental focus, or personal development, I believe that Martial Arts training can ultimately lead to a better quality of life."
David Quinlan

David Quinlan, Director and Lead Instructor for Bushintai-Do Programs, began martial arts training in 1977, began teaching full-time in 1984. At that time, teaching martial arts to children was an unusual practice, and he quickly discovered that specific, age-appropriate curricula needed to be developed for teaching children as young as four. Inspired by this need, David created a developmentally appropriate movement program for martial arts instruction, and now teaches six different age and experience levels for children under the age of 14. He holds the rank of 6th degree Black belt in Kempo-Jujitsu, 2nd degree Black Belt in Arnis, the Filipino art of stick and knife fighting, Honorary Black Belt in Judo, Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and was an instructor of Wing Chun Kung Fu, a style that has no belt ranking system. Since 1988 he has owned and operated the Martial Way Self-Defense Center in Colchester, Milton, and Saint Albans, Vermont.

He was a successful competitor in Karate and Jiu-jitsu, and has trained several successful competitors in Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Kick-boxing, and Karate Point-Fighting.

He is a certified personal trainer specializing in functional movement for the activities of daily living, as well as the elite levels of strength and endurance required by athletes in the combat sports.

David Quinlan has dedicated his entire adult life to the study, practice, and teaching of the martial arts. He created Bushintai-Do, a non-violent synthesis of various traditional martial arts skills designed for school-age children, in 2001, and currently teaches it in three Vermont School Districts. He developed and runs a leadership program for middle-schoolers, in which advanced students help teach Bushintai-Do to other children. He developed the Thinksafe Self-Defense program, as a means to teach practical self-defense strategies to those unable to commit to long-term training. He and his staff teach several Thinksafe presentations to corporations, school, and civic groups each year. The founder and head instructor at Martial Way, he still enjoys working with all ages and skill levels.

David Quinlan lives in Milton, Vermont with his wife, 2 children, and varying numbers of horses, dogs, cats, and chickens. On good days, he balances dedication to family, living close to the land, and teaching martial arts to all age groups.
